Brush Pads for Noble Comb

Posted on

During the rebuilding of the noble comb at the Calderdale industrial museum, Widdop de Courcy (part of Bentham & Holroyd limited) were asked to supply a dabbing brush, as the one for their machine was from an earlier model.

These brushes moved up and down very quickly to “dab” the wool into the combing teeth of the machine. Each machine had two brushes each, and by using the same technique from 175 years ago we manufactured a replacement for that model. Bentham’s had been making them and repairing them up until 1994. Initially it was hoped we had one from old stock but it was not to be.

So With help from Calderdale industrial museum we were able to identify which model the dabber brushes were from and offer the replacement.

As you can see from the pictures, these are filled with brush filament by hand, a process called “hand drawing” which is still used to thus day when the need for little loss of filament is required, plus also when the filament material is not suitable for a machine to be used.

We are proud to say that we are an assisting partner of the Calderdale industrial museum, and encourage as many people to take the time on a Saturday to visit this gem of a museum.
